Austin Analytics is headed by John Austin, an internationally-known UK-based transport industry expert, who has particular expertise in Passenger Transport and Sustainable Transport.
John both works on his own account - supplying his expertise independently to clients, or supporting other groups or project managers - and also builds teams drawn from a number of regular, specialist and trusted associates to deliver particular projects. John is contributing to the MSc course Traffic & Transport Information Design organised jointly by the International Institute for Information Design (IIID) and the University of Applied Sciences FH St. Poelten, Austria, under the auspices of UNESCO
John is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and a Member of the Transport Planning Society. He is also an Associate Member of the Association of Transport Co-ordinating Officers. His degree is from the University of Cambridge, where he studied economics.
John has a rare ability to bridge the three worlds of academia, strategy / planning and commercial operations, and apply lessons from each.
An experienced Researcher, John is also available for Lecturing and Teaching in areas relating to Transport.
John is a member of both the Transport Planning and Development Management Interest Groups within RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute).
He is also a Project Manager and qualified PRINCE2 Practitioner.

John's background is in commercial public transport planning and operations, in the local authority sector, and in information and telecoms strategy all give him a wide understanding of the practical, political, financial and technological issues affecting transport project development.
John has participated in many industry Expert Panels, has visited and written about many Bus Rapid Transit schemes, and has been co-author of definitive guides to Car Clubs & Car Sharing and to Public Transport Information Websites. He has also visited Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore as a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellow, investigating aspects of transport provision there.
John Austin started his transport career on National Bus Company's two-year Senior Management Training Scheme, based at what was then United (now Arriva) in North-East England. During two weeks managing United's Loftus depot John had the idea of a leisure-based Sunday bus service running across the North Yorkshire Moors on roads never-before served by bus. He persuaded United's management that it would be a commercial success and on its first day of operation, in summer 1980, the 700 - Moorsrider service, as it was known, carried a full load of passengers. After John moved on from United others at the North Yorkshire National Park Authority took the concept over and radically developed and expanded it over the years. Today, 30 years later, Moorsbus, the successor to Moorsrider, is extremely well-known with visitors and in the industry, and goes from strength to strength. The route that John introduced is still the 'spine' of the Moorsbus network.

With extensive industry understanding, a sound awareness of commercial pressures, confident marketing skills, a strong focus on user needs and assured data research expertise, John has been in business as a transport consultant since 1994. He combines a clear understanding of strategic issues and of the major policy issues in transport and planning, with both an attention to detail and technical expertise.
