• John Austin was part of the Carl Bro-led team that in 2006 produced the specification for the future FareXChange Protocol to enable the exchange of UK public transport industry fares data. He had lead responsibility for the gathering of data and intelligence.

• John Austin studied Riga's concessionary fare system, as part of a World Bank-financed project advising on ways of returning the city's public transport services to financial viability.
